I found out about ascii sector from Star Wars Action News (SWAN).

SWAN has a webpage that had some pictures from Dragon Con 2007. One of the pictures had a bunch of dudes sporting a wcnews.com banner.

Wing Commander is totally tubular and so I went to wcnews and found a link to this site.

I was specifically searching for text-based games. I found it listed on Roguelike wiki.

Now, have to admit, the very first two minutes or so, I was totally confused. Because after launching from the planet, I thought what I saw is 3D in ASCII, and I wasn't getting why I can't turn or move any well.

Feel free to laugh :)

I, like many others, it seems, thought it was 3D too

Other!

I was looking for a new roguelike and came across Rogue Basin.  They had a link to January's version of Ascii Sector and I was HOOKED.

Now if I could only get the money for an Orion...

I found it while looking through the Linux Game Tome, but only tried it today, and it's great!

I've seen this mentioned in various places (that people first think it's 3D). I can certainly understand why you'd think that if you don't know anything about it. I suppose that'll be fixed when I get around to adding tutorial/help popup boxes.

Hehe, I started the game, got out of planet and was trying to figure how I moved the nose up and down untill I realized that the green thing on center was me.
I thought the aim was an indicator of where was the top of my ship, because it would be easier to do that than rotate the screen, I guess.
Also, the HUD makes it look like the cockpit of a ship.
It came from ... behind.

Found it while looking for Ubuntu-usable games.  And then broke my keyboard, so completely forgot about it until I got the replacement part in.  And now am just enjoying it immensely!

How?  Well, it was introduced to a pint of porter in less than optimal conditions.  Which caused the enter key and directional keys to short out.  Which required me to order a new keyboard for this laptop.

The DESKTOP got tied up with Dragon Age: Origins.

Ahh, what kind of porter?  I'd wager a nice, light american pilsner (read: water) would have had a less deleterious effect on the hardware ;-)
