Objects in Space, No Man's Sky, others?
« on: July 05, 2015, 10:15:02 AM »
On the old topics we used to have here about finding cool space games:

http://objectsgame.com/

It's the first time I've ever heard the term "modempunk", but I think I might understand what they mean. Also, it's primarily about trading and avoiding rather than open confrontation, probably because open confrontation is often deadly. They liken the combat to being in a submarine... I don't know what real space combat would be like, but the idea that you're staring at monitors and trying to figure out if there's a threat makes some sort of sense to me.

Anyone else hear of this? Any other games out there that you've been playing or have read about? Obviously No Man's Sky is a big thing.

Other noteworthy space games: Space Rangers Hd a war apart, Void Expanse, Unending Galaxy (Basically X3 in top/down with more events and things to do)

Cosmonautica:

"- The police are looking for a xenomorph with one eye called Murphy.
- What is the other eye called?"

 ;D

Hmm... That SIMs thing looks strange to me... but it still looks funny!

With trading style games I'm always on the lookout for a decent simulated economy that's interesting to interact with. How is Cosmonautica in that regard?

I remember it was hard to trade because the market changed or got depleted of items but it was way early access, i don't know how it is now ;o but i'll let you know if i get back into Cosmonautica. Also i'd like to note another space sim, Evochron Mercenary. It has been in development even after its release on Steam and got way more things to do than Elite Dangerous

That was one thing that struck me about Elite Dangerous. It's beautiful, but seems a bit empty. Maybe the multiplayer part of it helps. Computers can do so much but we make them spend most of the time crunching graphics! :)

Speaking of economy in the game, they blogged about it not too too long ago:

I hadn't heard of Objects in Space. Love the graphics style in the screenshots.

I'm very interested in how to model a system wide economics.

I wonder if cosmonautica has a limited universe as asciisector, or is it infinite as in Elite Dangerous?

Hey, welcome back.

I think Cosmonautica may have a limited but random setup, from what I've been able to determine. Not 100% sure, though.

thanks. Is it just you and GLI holding down the fort now?

I just started up asciisector yesterday for the first time in years, man I had forgotten what a genuinley great game it is. I have to find time to play some again.

Yeah, was nice to start over and just run around. Do the obligatory casino run and a few risky trades, get over the equipment hump and start taking hunter missions in my upgraded cargo ship. Naturally I still hope for more stuff to do but it's always nice to make a lot of cash on a gem run or market anomaly...

As far as fort holding, I dunno. I'm more in orbit than anything :)
