Notch said he used Java, because thats what he's comfortable programming in. And yeah, I find my laptop getting a bit warm while I play Minecraft.

but then other people gained access to the server they're playing on and started creating stories and other characters for the two guys to interact with (which most of the time means blowing stuff up or burning it down by "accident"!).

Thats called "Griefing" and is highly frowned upon.

Hey, VFP, I remember us discussing Spirited away, and other movies by that guy, so have a look at this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zTtwXQ5PJM
you can download the save, and play/explore it. Someone has waaaay to much time on their hands.

These are the movies that inspired that world, in order of Appearance:
    -Laputa, castle in the sky
    -My neighbour Totoro
    -Howl's moving castle
    -Spirited away
    -Porco Rosso
    -Future boy Conan

Pretty cool, a open source C++ version of Minecraft:

However, right now, it seems to be just a clone, but the creator claims the game will take a slightly different direction, (in the future, I assume).

This is highly interesting for those with old hardware, I guess.

I might check this out, since my laptop is only a single core processor...

Me too... I can never seem to find a multiplayer server that isn't ridiculously laggy or bugged.

For me it's the opposite. Have not played for almost a few months, but after seeing the Aether-mod, I decided to build a model of the Acropolis the other day. But I have not actually tried any mods yet. I'm lazy, so I just watch others play on youtube  :).

EDIT: Some more information on the upcoming 1.8 was just released.

Yeah Aether looks cool but just as dangerous if not more than the Nether, I'm downloading the mods and setting it up now

Its pretty straight forward for windows.

1. I use 7zip to open the minecraft.jar.
2. Delete the META INF folder
3. Download the aether mod, modloader, audio mod and the shockah api
4. For audio mod: Drag and drop all files into the jar
5. For modloader: same
6. For shockah api: open the bin folder in the zip and drag and drop all files into the jar
7. For the aether mod: open the jar folder in the zip and drag and drop all files into the jar

And done. Its worked fine for me so far.
