Everything Else / Freepascal 3.0 is out
« on: November 27, 2015, 08:41:13 AM »
Greetings!

I don't know how close you keep your ear to the ground, CK, but as topic suggests, 3.0 is out:
http://wiki.freepascal.org/FPC_New_Features_3.0

And here's an interesting interview with project founder, Florian Klaempfl, from 2014:

Everything Else / Star Citizen by Wing Commander creator.
« on: November 05, 2012, 09:14:13 AM »
The Wing Commander creator is at it again, now to make the "ultimate space game".

Graphics seems way too fancy for my poor laptop.

Everything Else / Asciisector featured on jupiterbroadcasting!
« on: June 26, 2012, 08:58:46 AM »
I had this link to an interview with Richard Stallman, that I probably pulled from slashdot a long time ago, and finally decided to watch it. Some BS in the beginning, but then (at 05:04) just before the interview starts the host starts talking about asciisector! With screenshots.

http://www.jupiterbroadcasting.com/17822/richard-stallman-gnulas-s20e10/

The Stallman interview was... Stallman. Discussing the Amazon "Swindle", secure boot in Windows 8, DRM, SOPA, indie development, how people shouldn't have kids, and freedom of course. The discussion becomes quite interesting at about (00:50:30 - 01:10:00), in my opinion, when he talks about how it's better for programmer's children to starve than for their parents to sell propriety software.

Everything Else / Spam bots on the forum
« on: June 22, 2012, 08:51:26 AM »
Would it be difficult to implement a "report as sapm" function on the forums?

There are now two posts today by fghghfd who just takes what someone else wrote and re-posts that, and then o fcourse there's a link in his/its signature.

I almost didn't notice it, since the post it copied were +6 months old.

Everything Else / Notch will/might do a ascii-sector like space game!
« on: March 26, 2012, 04:53:52 PM »
So Notch announced that he might/want to do a space game, "Like Elite but do it right", and that you should be able to walk around on the ship instead of being the ship.

He also said that he doesn't mind if someone steels the idea, because he just wants to play it, so maybe the perfect time for those active on the mincraft forum to start spamming about asciisector.

After all, Minecraft is based/inspired by another ascii-game: dwarf fortress.

Everything Else / The sience of Doom.
« on: January 27, 2012, 05:00:39 PM »
I guess many of you have seen this paper recently published:
http://arxiv.org/abs/1201.4995v1
Quote

We establish some general schemes relating the computational complexity of a video game to the presence of certain common elements or mechanics, such as destroyable paths, collecting items, doors activated by switches or pressure plates, etc.. Then we apply such "metatheorems" to several video games published between 1980 and 1998, including Pac-Man, Tron, Lode Runner, Boulder Dash, Deflektor, Mindbender, Pipe Mania, Skweek, Prince of Persia, Lemmings, Doom, Puzzle Bobble 3, and Starcraft. We obtain both new results, and improvements or alternative proofs of previously known results.

Everything Else / syndicate is getting a remake
« on: September 13, 2011, 12:45:17 PM »
They're making a new Syndicate game, but this time as a first person shooter apparently, so I don't know what'll be "syndicate" about it other than the cyberpunk environment.

I recommend reading this article about the two brothers behind another great SDL-ascii-art game: Dwarf Fortress. I'm stunned by their devotion, a truly interesting read, about who they are, the time, and love they spend on writing this game.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/24/magazine/the-brilliance-of-dwarf-fortress.html?pagewanted=all

I couldn't stop reading once the article focused on the life of Tarn and Zach (after a brief introduction of the game).

Quote from: "NY Times"
Tarn has been single since graduate school, when he dated a Cisco systems administrator for a short time. I asked him whether he wanted children. “I don’t mind the idea of never having kids,” he said. “I want to stay focused on the game, and if I had kids, I’d wind up paying attention to them instead.”

Everything Else / Asciisector mentioned/reviewed by kmandla
« on: May 24, 2011, 03:53:06 PM »
I've been following this blog (mostly about using Linux on laptops with < 150 MHz) for some time, and probably linked to it before, so I was checking out the posts I've missed during the weekend, and lookie here:

Ascii Sector amuses me though, mostly because it captures a lot of the space trading genre, without ever needing much in the way of graphics.

Congrats CK! It would be interesting to see if the number of downloads increased during the past (and coming days), as a result of his mentioning asciisector. I know there are a lot of people reading his blog.

Everything Else / MineCraft anyone?
« on: November 23, 2010, 12:48:44 PM »
Anyone playing?
I love Lego, and game-play before graphics, and freedom, so this game is very addictive:

Bugs / No scroll function in equip shop -> sell -> locker
« on: November 02, 2010, 09:48:04 AM »
I've reported this minor thing before, but I'm too lazy to find it, as it was many months, and many posts ago. The issue is:

No mouse scroll function in equipment shop -> sell -> locker.
(haven't tried selling form the backpack.)

EDIT: also, at the top of my web page, it says "P" i.e. the old logo.
