Development Discussion and Suggestions / Re: New Mission Ideas

Mass evacuation mission, I like it!

For the "Confiscate Cargo" mission, if you can just buy it from the market, and hand that in instead, then what's the point? Wouldn't it be better if you were confiscating items? Like Death star blueprints? Or the aim is to destroy the cargo of a ship? Like ship full of Ultimate, and you take if from them and you must jettison it (or you turn into a smuggler yourself) and you have to fight the urge to not jettison such a valuable, highly illegal, cargo?

There is some slim chance to (blind) escape to cockpit. NPCs cant go there so you can wait.
Oh, I had forgotten that. (I wonder if that's in the manual?). So ascii sector is set in a post 9/11 world.

In real life, you don't actually get 100% blind by pepper spray. It just hurts like hell to see, and your eyes are filled with tears (and you have snot running down the nose and the mouth is drooling). Maybe have a limited vision field to a few squares in front of you, and mask every other tile with a "#" or something?

If "BLINDED" maybe the player can "Blind punch in air" and have a <small number>% chance of hitting?

Ha! That's a new one.

Now if only there was a way to increase the reliability of getting minerals...

Sounds like some kind of device should be installed to allow this. In Frontier (sorry to nag about this) there was some Mining laser, I think. Blowing up rocks with that produced a lot of minerals you could scoop up, I think. Although memory is hazy.

I don't remember but I think I've never seen "slave commodity event"

There actually is, if I'm not mistaken. I think I had one in the latest version. Then it went away when human rights activists cheered, or that was the news when it went away.

I actually noticed this as well, but maybe others don't quite follow what you mean, but the top row of ascii art of the planets almost read out "COOOLD".

I think if they actually spelled out "cold" it would be a bit too obvious. It's more fun this way, it implants the word "cold" in the player's mind, without actually being written.

You hire crewmembers to fill passenger slots. Each crew member can have specialties that can aid you.
This is similar to Starflight, and Protostar, I think. Worked nicely there. For an example of crew selection process in starflight, see:

Also, in Frontier, you have a reputation for how desirable you are as an employer. Treat crew poorly, and people don't want to work with you.

I really liked the bureaucratic runaround exercise on the capital planet, when paying fines. Made me laugh the first time.

Regarding killing slavers, it made me think of Ultima. Although I haven't played any Ultima game yet, but I've watched some reviews of Ultima IV-VI, and seems interesting. The games don't have any villain, instead you're on a quest to better yourself, to be honourable, etc. I'm thinking if killing a slaver should have a negative impact on your fixer reputation, but on the other hand increase your "honour" or something? Well, I'm just throwing out some loose thoughts.

I'm a bit late to the party, but looks very cool. Three questions come to mind:
- What's it called?
- Source available? (/What language?)
- What will be its niche, i.e. what will it do that asciisector doesn't?

I actually downloaded the latest version a few weeks ago, and again got lost in Asciisector. I was reminded of what a great game it is. Also, in my old save I had a maxed out Pegasus, 2 million in the bank, and max skill and max reputation on everything (well, not for Pirates, Retros or Kilrathi). So now I'm back on a new game.

A thing I noticed is that even though I "only" have 20% rifle skill, there's almost no jitter when aiming at real persons. I thought it was a bug first, but maybe it's because it was the more expensive rifle and short range?

Also, slightly strange to have on rifle in each hand. makes me think of Arnold in Commando.

The dead will rise again!

Watched Re-animator (1985) recently. I'm fascinated by the line "No ones death is safe". It's brilliant! (Or "Ultimate" even?)

If anyone craves nerd-info on the force, Bloomberg's has this artcle on statistics of how The Force is used, how much, and by whom.

I think it's a quite boring and unimaginative way to try to make Ray more legitimate as main character by saying she's the daughter of Luke. It's like saying "hey, she's almost Luke, so this is almost the original Star Wars". I'd like her to stand on her own, without any heritage from Luke. Also, did Luke abandon her on that planet? She had childhood memories of being abandoned by her parents.

Now I am among you as well. Saw it for New Year's eve.

Like yet another Death Star type superweapon. And another trench run.
Yeah, and they even joke about it, "what do we shoot to make it blow up?".

But I think they just wanted to play it safe. It was very much a meld of episode 4,5,6. Even had the confrontation on the walkway Darth vs. Luke's hand / Kylo Ren vs. Han Solo's gut.

Quote from: ck
The movie was somewhat suggesting that she's Luke's daughter,
Really? Because of the light saber thingy?

Quote from: Iltsuger
I can see why people liked Kylo Ren, although I didn't connect with the guy for whatever reason
I thought he had an uncanny resemblance to Zach Braff in some angles.

Speaking of references, "Made the kessel run in under 12 parsecs". They repeated that little blunder, this time on purpose for sure.

I do wonder how two characters who never seen a light saber before could be so good at using them?

Also, that Hitler-like First Order scene with the red banners and speech in front of the troops was a bit too much of "Look how evil we are, we look just like Nazis"

Hm, so what kind of space game is it? Is it like asciisector/Elite/Privateer, so you have one ship, and the universe is your oyster, ready to trade, fight, explore?

It says "RPG", so there's some kind of role playing element in it?

...and now we add yet another year to our lives.

Since today is the main day for saying "merry christmas" in Scandinavia (i.e. giving presents) I'll say it today, so Merry Christmas!

Cool to hear (on the dev. video) that there will be some dev work comming asciisectors way.
