And in board games, we have open world space exploration:

50 minutes long review, so takes a while. And the producer's website seems to be down despite the 300k kickstarter. Maybe just need to pay their net-rent, I dunno :)

Weird, since it looks like they're planning on commercializing it.

In the case of Pioneer, they were inspired by Elite Frontier, so they wrote the game from scratch with Elite Frontier in mind. Thus they were a clone of sorts.

Then Paragon actually copied the entire source code of Pioneer, (thus they're a fork), and did massive replacement and modification to it (referred to as "total conversion"). Since they actually copied the source code from pioneer they must adhere to the GPL license of the original Pioneer.

Hm. I've always had trouble understanding just when a piece of software ceases to be "inspired by" and becomes pretty much a copy. Perhaps people with more programming experience know better than I do about this sort of thing.

Apparently Paragon is a fork / total conversion of Pioneer. They seem to have hid the source code though. Pioneer licens demands Paragon to be open source or even free (as in freedom) software.

Yeah. The other X games feel a bit underrated from what I've seen so far, but the latest is a bit of a catastrophe.

Paragon looks nice, but I'm a bit weak for space :)

Don't mean to break the nice flow you got going there, but to put us back on topic, it seems like X rebirth is a shitty game, based on what I've heard.

I saw this review, which kind of made me laugh.

Also, to put us off topic again, I just saw this:

... and it's also big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.

Cool. I guess I sort of segued into it because of the shared world thing, but yeah, whatever you explore you're sort of on the ground. IN SPACE. Like we all are, you know?

Mirror Moon is much more a puzzle game than a space game. Giant Bomb did a Quick Look on it, and it looks quite amazing:

And I guess, along similar lines:

Haven't tried any of them yet, but the latter two have free-to-download builds.
